Redundant Utility clearance Scotland

We were delighted to be approached by a land owner to clear all disused underground services prior to redevelopment of the 400 acre site. This would then allow the developer to proceed with no unplanned delays from unidentified infrastructure, some of which dates back to the beginning of the 20th century. Over the course of 3 months a substantial amount of cast iron water mains, lead water pipes and copper power cables amongst other disused structures was recovered and recycled. All remaining live services were identified and accurately marked out.

Result: A clean, safe and clearly identified site ready for redevelopment. With the advantage of recycling much needed metals and assets.

Advantage: The removal of toxic waste such as lead, disused open manholes repaired or removed. Opportunities for copper and metal theft substantially reduced.

Inverbervie Rotor Radar Station. May 2025

Another site successfuly cleared of unwanted lead covered co-axle cable dating from the early 1950’s Cold war era.

Approximately 2 km of cable route consisting of multiple co-axle cables were recovered. This included the complex finding, identifying and recording of all live fibre and power cables feeding various live masts on the site, removing the disused cable routes resulted in the site being more user friendly for future developement, client extremely satisfied.

Underground disused asset recovery programme: June- December 2023

Gilmerton Land Services LTD has recently completed a successful recovery programme of dissused underground power cabling, dating from the 1940s-1980s at a former UK RAF wartime airfield. 

This now enables the client to develop the site safely, without any of the unnecessary hold up costs involved in identifying rogue cables. 

The programme resulted in the recovery of 43km of cable route, consisting of a total of 204 tonnes of various cables, along with all the added benefits involved with the recycling of recovered materials.

Broken down these weights consist of:

– Lead content: 85 tonnes 
– Copper content: 21 tonnes
– Steel Armour: 43 tonnes 
– PVC coating: 44 tonnes 
– Waste tar/oil impregnated paper: 11 tonnes 

Ultimately, leaving the client extremely satisfied.

Redundant cable removal.

We are pleased to be working with our client in the removal of the disused,old and unwanted underground cabling, After many years of operation these cables are disconnected and abandoned posing a logistic and environmental problem. GLS work closely with the client in removing any threat to the environment and creating a safe working area.

Ottercops Chain Home 40

Ottercops Moss Chain Home radar station (CH.40) was located beside the A696 on the high ground halfway between the villages of Elsdon and Kirkwhelpington.

Built in June 1939, this vast site, consisting of four 360 feet tall steel transmitter towers positioned 180 feet apart, and four wooden receiver towers 240 feet tall, was one of the last Chain Home stations to become operational.

We identified and successfully recovered the following disused underground assets:

  1. 3 power cables serving 2 sets of radio towers
  2. A borehole for water to serve live water pipe
  3. Total cable recovered 18 tonnes with a content of 8 tonnes of lead, the rest was a mixture of copper and waste material.
  4. 38 locations where steel angle iron was protruding out of the ground. The reason being was due to the felling of the 4 360’ towers where the tops had embedded into the soft ground and could not be recovered at that time.
  5. Recovered 11 tonnes of steel.
  6. Field was subsequently rendered safe for use to the delight of the client.
  7. This legacy is important and the remaining evidence of this home chain station are the two underground reserves, both intact internally, their entrances have been made safe by large boulders to stop sheep falling into the chamber. aswell as inquisitive visitors.

Backfilling Trenches and Other Excavations.

Backfill is the key to a solid and stable grading

September:2020 Airfield in SW England, 4 trenches x 1mtr deep, 2mtrs apart were completed. the Images demonstrate the importance of replacing the sub and top soil exactly where they came from within 30 mins of excavation and to ensure use of correct compaction rates. As you can see this method gives spectacular results within short period of time. By May 2021 no sign of previous activity, grass and nature back as before. Client delighted 😃

Local Cell Corrosion (Differential Aeration)

A recent Completion of a contract by GLS  in SW England where 25km of trenching yielded 30 tonnes of corroded lead served cable, was recovered. Which clearly demonstrated a classic example of Differential aeration (Local Cell Corrosion) If left in the ground parts of the cable will degrade and enter the water course causing damage to the environment.Result: environmental cleanup.
