Underground disused asset recovery programme: June- December 2023

Gilmerton Land Services LTD has recently completed a successful recovery programme of dissused underground power cabling, dating from the 1940s-1980s at a former UK RAF wartime airfield. 

This now enables the client to develop the site safely, without any of the unnecessary hold up costs involved in identifying rogue cables. 

The programme resulted in the recovery of 43km of cable route, consisting of a total of 204 tonnes of various cables, along with all the added benefits involved with the recycling of recovered materials.

Broken down these weights consist of:

– Lead content: 85 tonnes 
– Copper content: 21 tonnes
– Steel Armour: 43 tonnes 
– PVC coating: 44 tonnes 
– Waste tar/oil impregnated paper: 11 tonnes 

Ultimately, leaving the client extremely satisfied.

Backfilling Trenches and Other Excavations.

Backfill is the key to a solid and stable grading

September:2020 Airfield in SW England, 4 trenches x 1mtr deep, 2mtrs apart were completed. the Images demonstrate the importance of replacing the sub and top soil exactly where they came from within 30 mins of excavation and to ensure use of correct compaction rates. As you can see this method gives spectacular results within short period of time. By May 2021 no sign of previous activity, grass and nature back as before. Client delighted 😃

Back to Work

GLS are pleased to say they are planning a return to work by the end of July. Protecting the health and safety of employees, customers and third parties on our site is at the forefront of our minds. Eastriggs completion

glsGilmerton Land Services are delighted to announce that the decommissioning  of the MOD Munitions depot at Eastriggs near Gretna Green is now successfully completed.

Thank you to all of those who contacted us regards the railway lines which are now all sold.

GLS get that sinking feeling!

GLS got that sinking feeling as one our of 25-ton Liebherr 906 excavator got bogged down at Eastriggs Cumbria!

A further 906 excavator was needed in a six-hour rescue operation after one of our diggers was submerged in a 50sq metre peat bog.  A desperate attempt by the driver to free the excavator was made but he was forced to abandon it. Luckily we managed to retrieve it the next day by laying a road and covering the surrounding areas in 25 tonnes of steel matting previously reclaimed from the site to create a road strong enough to hold the weight of the digger. Thanks to the expert work of Stuart from Rutherfords of Coldstream the next day  we were able to retrieve it, very dirty but unscathed!
