Alcan Pechiney Aviatube, formerly Alcan High Duty Alloys Extrusions ltd, was built in the 1940’s. It was an aluminium alloy extrusion company which primarily manufactured parts for the aerospace market including Concorde and the Space Shuttle. The Factory closed in 2007 and has since stood empty. Whitehaven Developments acquired the site in 2014.
Gilmerton Land services (GLS) identified the potential credit for the recovery of the underground services, removal of redundant pipework and switch gear from buildings to the new owner of the site. This in turn would remove the temptation from the already evident metal thieves. Two live 11,000 v cables run through the site feeding the whole surrounding Industrial estate. These crossed the redundant cable routes at many points. It was important that these were identified and in no way damaged.
Gilmerton Land Services (GLS) Solution
GLS completed historical research to identify the live and redundant underground service routes in the form of High and Low voltage cables. Following this GLS were able to offer a credit payment of over £35k. GLS developed a safe system of works and using radio detection equipment clearly located the cable routes on site. The cables were excavated and processed for recycling off site using the GLS excavators. All redundant switch gear and loose pipework was removed from the empty buildings and processed for recycling off site.
