Description
Challenge
The site is located adjacent to the operational Ferrybridge C Power station. The Gilmerton Land Services (GLS) work area was located within the busy construction site of the new Multifuel Power Station. GLS was contracted to remove the liability of 2 circuits of oil filled 132KV cables from the work area to allow the new construction works to proceed safely and efficiently. GLS had to work in partnership with other contractors and maintain good communications to ensure works were carried out safely between all operatives on site. The Key objective was for GLS was to remove the environmental liability of the cable. The cable had been re-routed by others and the redundant section remained for GLS to recover and recycle. The cable was made of copper cores, corrugated aluminium sheath and oil fluid tubes.
Gilmerton Land Services (GLS) Solution
GLS completed a full site survey of the work area and designed the safe systems of work to ensure the recovery works were completed safely. GLS worked with all stakeholders to ensure that no other works were jeopardised. The works were planned and daily toolbox talks communicated with others on site. The insulating oil was flushed through the cable using the GLS designed compressed air and vacuum pumping system which was connected directly to the cable. All stop joints were excavated and flushed through to remove residual oil. The cable was excavated in approx. 50 meter sections and all cut ends sealed to prevent and residual oil spillage. Sections of the cable were pulled through under a haul road, the cores were anchored to prevent them being pulled out of the sheath. Each 50 meter section was placed in a waiting skip for recycling off site.
