Challenge
Invista Textiles and Air Products covered a 128 acre plot on the Wilton International site. Wilton International is a multi-occupancy chemical manufacturing site the north side of the A174 road. Until the 1990’s the site was formerly wholly owned and operated by ICI since its opening in the 1950’s. The site demolition was completed in 2012 down to slab level.
Gilmerton Land services (GLS) recognised that the redundant underground cooling pipes, process water pipes and electric cables (HV/LV) were still in place. This extensive network of redundant pipework are a potential pathway for contamination, highlighting how important it is to remove this risk. GLS identified the potential credit to the Homes & Communities Agency (HCA) for the recovery of the underground services. Following this, GLS were able to offer a credit payment of over £114k to the HCA.
Gilmerton Land Services (GLS) Solution
GLS completed historical research to identify the live and redundant underground service routes in the form of High and Low voltage cables, Potable and Process water pipes, cooling water pipes. The pipes recovered ranged from 6” diameter to 61” diameter. Using historic drawings and results from the intrusive survey locations of redundant pipes were established.
